L-Sections, Cross-Sections & Road Design for Government Contractors

For contractors building roads, drainage and stormwater lines, the survey is where the money is made or lost. A clean L-section and set of cross-sections tell you exactly how much earth to move, how the levels should run, and how to bill the work. At Yogeshwar Associates we capture these with DGPS and Total Station so your design and quantities stand up at tender and at measurement.

What an L-section and cross-sections are

Every road or drain is described in two directions.

  • The longitudinal section (L-section) runs along the centreline. It plots the reduced level (RL) of the ground at each chainage — the running distance measured from a start point (0+000, 0+020, 0+040 and so on). This shows how the ground rises and falls over the length of the work.
  • The cross-section cuts across the alignment at each chainage. It records levels at the centre and at offsets left and right, describing the shape of the ground from edge to edge.

Together, chainage and RLs give a complete picture: the L-section along the length, the cross-sections across the width.

How this feeds road design

Once the existing ground is captured, the design levels are set on top of it.

  • Levels and gradient — the L-section is used to fix the finished road level and a smooth gradient, so water drains and vehicles ride comfortably.
  • Camber — the cross-sections carry the camber (the slope from crown to edge) that sheds rainwater off the carriageway.
  • Drainage and stormwater — for a drain or stormwater line, the L-section fixes the invert levels and fall, so the line flows the whole way without ponding.

The difference between existing ground and design level, at every chainage, is what the earthwork is built on.

By comparing existing and design levels across each cross-section and multiplying by the distance between chainages, we compute cut-and-fill quantities section by section. Accurate cross-sections mean the earthwork quantity in your tender matches what is actually moved — which protects your rate and your final billing.

  • Chainage-wise level sheets — RLs at every chainage, centre and offsets, ready to check.
  • L-section and cross-section CAD drawings — clean drawings for design and for the department's records.
  • Quantity statements — cut, fill and net earthwork worked out chainage by chainage for tender and billing.

How we capture it

We fix control with DGPS to centimetre accuracy, then run the alignment with a Total Station, picking up centre and offset levels at each chainage. For long or open corridors we can add drone/UAV coverage. The field data is processed in CAD to produce the L-section, cross-sections and quantity statements in the format your tender and department require.
